The Northrop A-17 was designed as an attack aircraft for the US Army Air Corps in the mid 1930s. It was obsolete by 1940 but was still popular as a training and utility aircraft with many air forces.

The A-17 was an attack aircraft developed from earlier similar aircraft made by Northrop in the early 1930s.

The prototype first flew in 1935 and they began entering service in February 1936.

A total of 411 were manufactured in two basic versions, the earlier ones with fixed undercarriage and later ones with retractable undercarriage.

They were popular and reliable aircraft but by the time the United States entered the war and were only useful for coastal patrols.

Many were sold to overseas air forces including Britain, Canada and South Africa where they were used as trainers.

This model represents a standard A-17 in service with the USAAC in late 1939.
