The Boeing 737 is the most ordered and most produced jet airliner in history with over 6,000 manufactured and a further 2,000 on order in May 2009. On average there are 1,250 737s in the air at any given time.

Development of the Boeing 737 commenced in 1964 and the prototype made its maiden flight on 9 April 1967.

The first production 737-100 flew on 13 March and they began entering service with Lufthansa in December 1967.

Only thirty 737-100s were manufactured and Lufthansa was the only significant operator, although they were later passed on to other airlines.

Ansett New Zealand, a wholly owned subsidiary of Ansett Australia, began operations with four 737-100s in 1987 but they were old and noisy by then and withdrawn from service in 1989.
