History
The Sea Harrier was a navalized version of the Harrier ground attack fighter.
It served with the Royal Navy when it lost its conventional carriers and was a vital element of Britain’s success in retaking the Falkland Islands in 1982.
The Sea Harrier was a development of the Hawker Siddeley Harrier ground attack fighter.
The main changes were a multi-mode radar, a raised cockpit and Sidewinder armament.
The Sea Harrier replaced Phantoms as the Royal Navy’s fighter when the navy lost its carrier fleet and gave it a semblance of air defense capability.
Orders were placed in 1975 and they began sea operations in June 1979.
They were in service when Britain retook the Falklands Islands from Argentina in 1982.
This model represent XZ457 of 899 Naval Air Squadron, the highest scoring Sea Harrier of the Falklands War.
