The Douglas DC-2 began a revolution in air transport in the 1930s.

It introduced new standards in speed, comfort and efficiency and led to introduction of the larger DC-3.

Four DC-2s were imported into Australia in the late 1930s.

The Douglas DC-2 was designed in response to the slightly earlier Boeing 247.

The first one made its premier flight 11 May 1934 and they entered service with TWA a week later.

With their speed and comfort they were immediately popular with passengers and the airlines.

A total of 198 were manufactured.

After the government lifted its ban on importing American aeroplanes in 1935 four DC-2s were imported in 1936 and 1937.

They flew on Australia’s main air routed in conjunction with four DC-3s.

The crash of the Kyeema in 1938 led to a complete review of Australia’s civil aviation from 1939.

This model represents VH-UYC (Kyeema) flying for Australian National Airways in October 1938.
