The Boeing 787 is a new generation airliner featuring very fuel efficient engines and airframes of the most modern design and composition. The 787-9 is the second of three proposed version of this airliner to be produced.

Boeing began planning its 787 in the late 1990s to replace its existing 747-400 and 767 airliners.

The 787 was to be produced in a number of varieties differing mainly in fuselage length.

The first 787 was rolled out in July 2007, the first flight took place on 15 December 2009 and 787s began entering airline service in October 2011.

The newer 787-9 had several new features including a fuselage stretch of 6.1 metres and first flew on 17 September 2013.

Air New Zealand was the launch airline.

By the end of 2014 a total of 228 Boeing 787s had been delivered, of which ten were Boeing 787-9s
