The Airbus A.340 is a long range version of the Airbus family of jet airliners. They began entering service in the early 1990s and have become popular with long range airlines around the world.

The A.340 began life with plans to develop the Airbus A.300 and uses many of the fuselage components of the earlier airliner with improved avionics and a new four engine wing.

It was designed to replace the old Boeing 707s and DC-8s, the first A.340 flew in April 1992 and was certified towards the end of December that year.

A.340 deliveries commenced in early 1993, flying with Lufthansa and later with more than 30 airlines.

By late 2001 309 had been orderd and 205 were in operation.

This model represents 9V-SJA, the first A.340 to fly for Singapore Airlines
