The AMX-30 was developed as France’s Main Battle Tank in the 1960s and over 2,000 were produced between 1966 and 1993.

From 1997 a further 1,500 were manufactured to B2 standard and earlier ones were upgraded to it.

The AMX-30 was developed as France’s Main Battle Tank during the 1960s to meet French Army requirements for a relatively light but agile tank, in comparison to bigger, heavier and less mobile tanks made by other countries.

The resulting tank was considered inferior by many and the French Army began improvement programs very shortly after they entered service.

The most extensive upgrade was the B2 version with a more powerful engine, improved transmission, upgraded ammunition and fire control systems and other improvements to make it a better tank.

This model represents an AMX-30B2 in Saudi Arabia during the Gulf War.
