The ATR 72 a stretched version of the popular ATR42. It is one of the world’s most popular regional airliners, built jointly by French and Italian companies and assembled in France. They are now used by over 100 airlines.

The ATR72 is a stretched version of the ATR42 which was launched by ATR (Avions de Transport Régional or Aerie da Transporta Regionale) in 1981.

The ATR72 was announced in 1986, the first one made its maiden flight on 27 October 1988 and they began entering service in October 1989.

They have been very popular with regional airlines and 678 had been delivered by the end of 2013.

The ATR72-500 is an improved version of the basic ATR72 with more powerful engines driving six bladed propellers that gives improved performance.

This model represents VH-FVY in service with Virgin Australia Regional Airlines (formerly Skywest) during 2013.
