The Boeing 747 ‘Jumbo Jet’ revolutionised air travel. Its huge size and efficiency reduced the cost of flying and made international travel commonplace. By December 2013 a total of 1,482 747s had been manufactured.

The first Boeing 747 made its maiden flight on 9 February 1969 and they began entering service in January 1970.

The 747-400 passenger version offered increased range and capacity, revised wings and engines and a new two-man cockpit in comparison with earlier 747 versions but the freighter retained the shorter upper deck of earlier versions to save weight.

The freighter version also has a hinged nose to allow pallets to be loaded onto the main deck and space for containers below deck.

Deliveries began in October 2002 and 166 were delivered before production turned to the later 747-8F.
