History

The Boeing B-17G was the ultimate production model of the ‘Flying Fortress’ that served with United States forces in every theatre of World War II and most famously in day-light raids on German targets during the war.

Design of the B-17 began in 1934, the first version flew in December 1936 and the first production bomber in June 1939.

Britain found them unsuitable but when the United States entered the war later versions more suited to the European environment were available.

The B-17G was best equipped version for the day-light bombing role but B-17s they were only fully effective when long range fighter escorts became available.

A total of 13,000 B-17s were constructed but they were quickly superceded by jet powered aeroplanes after the war.

This model represents a B-17G, c.1944.
