History

The Boeing P-12 was perhaps the most important fighter in Unites States military service in the interwar period. It was produced in a number of Army and Navy versions, serving well into the 1930s.

The Boeing P-12 and its US Navy equivalents started life as a privately funded project by Boeing to produce a new generation of fighters for the United States military services in the late 1920s.

The prototype Boeing Model 83 first flew on 25 June 1928, both the Navy and Army were impressed and ordered versions.

In all 336 P-12s were delivered, the largest number being P-12Es that began life as a private venture, flying for the first time on 29 September 1930.

The US Army ordered 135 P-12Es in March 1931 and 110 were delivered later in the year with the remainder being upgraded and redesignated P-12Fs.
