History

The Convair XB-46 was designed in 1944 as a United States response to German jet bomber developments. While other bombers developed at this time went into production only one XB-46 was constructed.

In 1944 the US War Department issued a requirement for a range of medium jet bombers and designs resulting from this competition were allocated numbers from B-45 to B-48.

Orders for three Convair XB-46 prototypes were issued in January 1945 but, with the end of the war in sight, only one prototype was constructed, and then only with sufficient equipment to prove its airworthiness and handling.

Instead, the Air Force decided on production of the North American B-45 and the Boeing B-47.

The XB-46 made its first flight on 2 April 1947, testing continued until August 1949 and it was scrapped in 1952.

This model represents the sole prototype, c. November 1947.
