The Dewoitine 500 was designed in the early 1930s and entered service in 1935. For its time it was an exceptional fighter but within a few years it had become obsolete due to the rapid evolution of fighter aeroplanes.

Designed for a 1930 fighter competition, the Dewoitine 500 was a high performance fighter combining the latest innovations in a small and simple airframe.

The prototype first flew on 18 June 1932 and the first orders were placed in November 1933.

The first production version flew in November 1934 and they began entering service in April 1935.

By the standards of the day they were very capable and produced in large numbers but they were obsolete by the time war was declared in 1939.

This model represents Dewoitine 500 No.47, (the first production aeroplane) of 1ére Esquadrille, Groupe de Chasse 1/4, c. 1936.
