The Fokker 50 was a regional airliner produced in the late 1980s and 1990s. It was a development of the earlier Fokker F-27 airliner and looks very much like it, apart from the new and much for fuel efficient engines.

The Fokker 50 was developed in the early 1980s a refinement of the popular Fokker F-27.

Sales of that airliner had been declining because of competition from several new and more modern regional airliners so Fokker redesigned the F-27 with many improvements including more efficient Pratt & Whitney engines which reduced fuel consumption by 30 per cent over the F-27.

The first Fokker 50 made its first flight on 28 December 1985 and they began entering revenue service in 1987.

Production ended in 1997 when Fokker was wound up as a result of financial problems. A total of 213 Fokker 50s were manufactured
