History

The General Motors FM-2 was a licence built version of the Grumman F4F US Navy fighter. It was used on small escort carriers which could not accommodate larger fighters and served to the end of World War II.

The General Motors FM was a licence manufactured version of the Grumman F4F fighter which was the most successful US Navy fighter of the early Pacific War period.

When Grumman ceased production of the F4F General Motors continued producing FM fighters to fly from small escort aircraft carriers that could not accommodate more modern and heavier fighters.

General Motors produced 5,280 FMs.

The FM-2 was optimised for escort carriers with a more powerful engine and taller tail fin.

They served with the US Navy up until the end of World War II.

This model represent a FM-2 of VC-93 flying from the USS Petrof Bay in 1945.
