The Grumman F-14 Tomcat was regarded by many as the finest warplanes ever made.

It was the last of a long line of Grumman fighters designed for the United States Navy and flew in service from 1972 until in mid 2006.

The Grumman F-14 was a long range interceptor with a secondary ground attack role.

It was developed after the multi-role F-111B failed to meet requirements and the US Navy’s combat experience during the Vietnam War.

Planning began in 1968, the prototype first flew on 21 December 1970 and they began entering service with the US Navy in October 1972.

A total of 712 F-14s were manufactured between 1969 and 1991. They were withdrawn from service with the US Navy in 2006.

This model represents a F-14A flying with VX-4 of the US Navy in 1988.
