The Leclerc is France’s current Main Battle Tank. They began entering service with the French Army in 1992 which had taken delivery of 406 by the end of 2006. A further 390 were delivered to the UEA.

Development of the French Engin Principal de Combat by the AMX works commenced in 1977.

In 1985 it was renamed after General Leclerc who had led Free French forces during World War II.

Mass production commended in 1990 and this new main battle tank entered service with the French Army in January 1992.

It was first used in combat with KFOR in June 1999 when 15 were deployed in Kosovo.

In addition to the 426 ordered for the French Army 390 were manufactured for the UEA with deliveries completed in 2004.
