The Lockheed C-5A is one of the largest aeroplanes in the world and one of the most important military freighters.

It has been in service for over 30 years and will continue in service for decades to come

The Lockheed C-5 was designed to meet a USAF requirement for a very large strategic transport and the first prototype flew in June 1968.

Their cost meant that only 81 were produced at the time and structural problems meant they all had to be fitted with stronger wings.

Later another 50 C-5Bs were produced between 1986 and 1989 and they all remain in service today.

They are capable of carrying the heaviest mobile military equipment in the United States inventory to almost any point of the world at very short notice and can land on rough airstrips of air drop most equipment.
