The McDonnell Douglas MD-83 was one of several MD-80 variants developed from the earlier Douglas DC-9 airliners. They were updated with new engines and longer fuselages to improve their carrying capacity.

The McDonnell Douglas MD-83 was one of a range of MD-80 series airliners developed from the earlier Douglas DC-9 series of airliners.

They were lengthened and updated with more powerful turbofan engines.

Development began in the late 1970s with the first one flying on 18 October 1979 and entry to service beginning in October 1980.

A total of 1,191 MD80 series airlines were made between 1979 and 1999. The final version of this series became the Boeing 717.

The MD83 was strengthened with slightly more powerful engines to carried more fuel to give it a longer range than other MD80s.

This model represents VH-LNH flying for Compass Airlines in November 1992.
