The MiG-29 was developed in Russia as an air superiority fighter to equal or better Western fighters. They entered service in 1983 and remain in service in many countries today. They are currently one of the world’s best fighters.

Studies leading to development of the MiG-29 began in 1969, to create a fighter capable of matching the next generation of Western fighters.

In 1971 the Soviets decided to develop a heavy fighter that became the Sukhoi Su-27 and a lighter fighter that became the MiG-29.

Detailed development began in 1974, the prototype MiG-29 first flew on 6 October 1977 and they began entering service June 1983.

The MiG-29 remains in service with many air forces around the world and is considered an exceptional dogfighter.

This model represents a standard operational MiG-29 in USSR service in the late 1980s.
