History

The MiG-31 is one of the most advanced interceptors to have ever flown. It can track and attack targets at very long distance and its long range allows it to defend remote areas of Russia’s air space.

Development of the MiG-31 began in the early 1970s to enhance Russia’s air defence, particularly remote areas lacking full radar and communications cover.

It was a development of the MiG-25 interceptor with more powerful engines, refined aerodynamics and advanced avionics.

The first version set many world records including the altitude record of 37 605 metres (123 524 feet).

Series production began in 1979 and around 250 were produced. They remain in service with five interceptor regiments across Russia.

This model represents a production MiG-31.
