The North American B-45 was one of several jet bombers developed in the United States in response to German jet developments during World War II. It was the first US Air Force’s first operational jet bomber.

Development of the B-45 and several other jet bombers began in 1944 in response to the development of German jet bombers.

In 1946 the B-45 was selected for development and the first prototype flew on 17 March 1947.

A total of 142 B-45s of all variants were constructed

When the Korean War started the United States became concerned about the Soviet Union threat in Europe and 40 B-45s were converted to carry nuclear weapons and began arriving in Britain in May 1952 where they provided a nuclear deterrence until Boeing B-47s began entering service.
