The North American F-100D was a ground-attack fighter with a secondary air-superiority role. It became the definitive version of the F-100 that resolved most of the problems of earlier versions and 1274 were built.

The F-100D differed from earlier versions in having wing flaps that increased lift and a taller tail that improved stability, as well as a more powerful engine.

After the first flight in January 1956 they began entering service with the US Air Force in September 1956 and remained in service there until 1972 and with the Air National Guard until November 1979.

F-100Ds also flew with the air forces of France, Turkey and Denmark, the latter air force received 48 which it operated until 1982.
