The Northrop Gamma was a highly advanced aeroplane designed and built in the 1930s.

Many of the features developed for the Gamma were later to appear in such famous aeroplanes as the Douglas DC-3 and SBD.

Jack Northrop was one of America’s most innovative aeroplane designers in the period between the wars and was involved in designing several famous aeroplanes.

In 1932 he formed Northrop Corporation with Donald Douglas. The company’s first product was the Gamma that incorporated many innovations including the wing design.

They made the Gamma a high performance long range record setting aeroplane.

Most versions of the Gamma were one-offs created for experimental and exploration flights.

Later Gammas were still flying when World War II began.

This model represents the first Northrop Gamma, ‘Sky Chief’, flown by Frank Hawks in June 1933.
