The Renault NC1 was designed in the mid 1920s as a replacement for the highly successful Renault FT light tank. However, problems with it’s design meant that it did not perform well and only a handful were manufactured.

The Renault NC1 was designed as a replacement for the Renault FT light tank of World War I.

A major defect of the FT was it’s slow speed which was the same as a soldier walking.

To improve the speed new tracks, suspension and engine were incorporated into the FT hull, giving a much higher speed.

However the new suspension system was complicated, expensive, difficult to make and easily broken in the field.

As a result NC1s were not ordered into production by the French army and only about twenty were made.

Most were sold to Japan, Yugoslavia and Poland and single examples were sold to other countries for testing, but the NC1 was never a success.

This model represents a standard Renault NC1 circa 1927.
