The Strv 103 (known as the ‘S-Tank’) was unique with its main gun fixed in the body of the tank and aimed by moving the entire tank.

It was used by the Swedish Army between 1967 and 1997 but was never used in combat.

Development of the S-Tank began in the mid 1950s, its design made possible by Sweden’s defensive defence policy in which tanks would mainly be used from prepared positions.

This reduced its height and concentrated its armour forward.

The Swedish army was very happy with this design and 290 S-Tanks were manufactured between 1967 and 1971.

The ultimate version was the Strv 103c that had improved fire control and engines.

Although it was never used in combat tests against contemporary tanks showed that it was at least equal to them in most conditions.

This model represents a Strv 103c in Swedish service c.1990.
