History

The Supermarine Swift was a interceptor fighter flown in Britain in the 1950s. It suffered many developmental problems and gained a bad reputation so it was overshadowed and replaced by the more successful Hawker Hunter.

The Supermarine Swift began as an experimental aircraft designed in Britain after World War II to take advantage of war time developments including jet engines and swept wings.

With the beginning of the Cold War Britain urgently needed a new generation of modern fighters so the Swift was developed as an interceptor fighter in 1950 when an order was placed for 100 off the drawing board.

However, the Swift suffered many developmental problems and gained a bad reputation so only 197 were manufactured and it only remained in service until 1961.

This model represents Swift FR.5 WK293 flying with 79 Squadron in West Germany in 1961.
