History
The Vickers Viscount was the first turbojet airliner to enter service in the world. It went on to become one of the most successful first generation post World War II air transports with 445 being built.
Development of the Vickers Viscount began in 1945, the prototype made its first flight on 16 July 1948 and they entered service with BEA in July 1950. The final Viscounts were manufactured in 1964.
The 800 series Viscount was a stretched (by 1.2m) version of the 700 series with more powerful Rolls Royce Dart engines.
The first of these Viscounts made its first flight in July 1956.
Further planned Viscount developments became the Vickers Vanguard.
Eleven 800 series Viscounts were brought to Australia and flown by Ansett-ANA, TAA and the RAAF.
