History

The Vultee Vengeance was an American dive bomber designed for sale to foreign air forces.

Like other dive bombers, they were soon found too vulnerable for front line service but continued to serve in secondary roles.

The Vultee Vengeance was developed to meet a French order for a dive bomber and 500 had been ordered by French and British governments before the prototype made its first flight on 30 March 1941.

Australia ordered another 400 after the beginning of the Pacific War and eventually 1,931 were manufactured.

The RAAF began receiving Vengeances in substantial numbers from April 1943 and they flew with five squadrons.

After March 1944 they were replaced in service by more effective fighter-bombers and they served the rest of the war in secondary roles.

This model represents a Vengeance Mk I of 12 Squadron, RAAF, based at Cooktown in September 1943.
