History

The AMX is a strike fighter designed and manufactured jointly by Italy and Brazil. It is a relatively simple and sturdy aeroplane that has been flown by the Italian air force in several actions including Bosnia, Afghanistan and Lybia,

The AMX began development with a 1977 Italian air force requirement for a strike fighter to replace its Fiat.G.91 that would bre capable of flying reconnaissance missions.

In 1980 the Brazilian air force issued a similar requirement with the result that the two nations decided to jointly design and build an aeroplane to meet their requirements.

The first AMX made its maiden flight on 15 May 1984 and about 200 were manufactured.

Italian AMXs have served in several NATO actions and upgrades to their equipment means they will remain in service well into the 2020s.
