History

The Boeing Vertol CH-46D was initially designed as a commercial transport helicopter. However it was adapted as a military transport and has flown for several countries including the US, Japan, Sweden and Canada

Development of the CH-46 began as a commercial transport in March 1956 but the greatest interest in it was shown by the US Marine Corps as a military cargo and utility helicopter.

It won a design competition in February 1961 and the first CH-46 flew on 16 October 1962.

They began entering service with the Marine Corps in early 1965 and they remain in service.

The Canadian Armed Forces and Sweden adopted it as a search and rescue aircraft in the 1960s.

Boeing Vertol sold worldwide rights in the aircraft to Kawasaki in 1965 and a number of versions were then produced in Japan.

This model represents a United States Navey CH-46D flying with HC-3.
