The Bombardier CRJ200 was a slightly improved version of the CRJ100 regional jet which competed in the jet powered regional airliner market. They entered service in 1992 and remain flying for many years to come.

The CRJ-200 began with studies to enlarge the earlier Canadair 600 business jet to expand its seating from 36 to 50 passengers with more efficient engines.

Development began in 1987 after Canadair’s sale to Bombadier and the first of three production CRJ100s made its first flight on 10 May 1991. It was certified in October 1992 and deliveries to customers occurred later that year.

The CRJ200 was almost identical to the CRJ100 but with more efficient engines that increased its cruise altitude and speed.

The CRJ100s and 200s were popular and between 1991 and 2006 a total of 1,021 were manufactured before Bombardier closed production.
