History

The Dewoitine 376 was a navalized version of the Dewoitine 371 French fighter. It was fitted with additional equipment including a folding wing. Twenty five were ordered but did not take part in World War II action.

The Dewoitine 376 was a navalized version of the Dewoitine 371, a fighter developed for the Armee de l’Air in the 1930s that ended up participating in the Spanish Civil War.

The first navalized version was the Dewoitine 373 that was fitted with additional equipment such as flotation gear, an arrester hook and a reduced wingspan so they could fit onto the lift of the French aircraft carrier.

Twenty were ordered and then a further 25 were ordered as Dewoitine 376s that were also equipped so the wings could be folded back – although it took an hour to get the wings ready for flight.

When World War II started they were assigned to guard French ports but did not encounter any German fighters, fortunately.

This model represents a Dewoitine D.376 No 31 in service with AC1.1 of Escadrille AC1 at Lanveoc-Poulmic in 1939.
