The Hawker Hurricane was one of the most important fighters of World War II, providing Britain and its allies with a robust fighter capable of filling many roles. Over 14,000 were constructed and served during the war.

Development of the Hurricane began in 1933 as a monoplane version of the Fury biplane fighter.

Official trials began in February 1936 and the first production order was issued in June that year.

The first Hurricanes were delivered to the RAF in December 1937 and they equipped 19 RAF squadrons at the beginning of World War II in September 1939.

The Hurricane was simple to build, easy to maintain and underwent several developments that made it a potent ground attack fighter so it remained in service until after the end of the war.
