History

The McDonnell F2H-2 was a fighter bomber developed in the United States in the second half of the 1940s. They served with the United States Navy and Marine Corps and took an active part in the Korean War.

The McDonnell F2H Banshee was a development of the earlier McDonnell FH with improved performance and two more powerful engines.

Development began in 1945 and the prototype made its first flight on 11 January 1947.

The F2H was produced from 1947 to 1953 in two major versions, the F2H-2 and the larger F2H-3 with a total production of 895 aircraft.

F2Hs served with the United States Navy and Marine Corps in the Korean war where it was used mainly in ground attack and reconaissance roles.

They remained in service until 1961.

This model represents a F2H-2 of VF-172 flying from the USS Essex off the coast of Korea in October 1951.
