The MiG-17 was an successful development of the Russian MiG-15 and one of the most successful transonic fighters. It was manufactured in three countries and served with the air forces of 20 countries.

Development of the MiG-17 began in 1949 to overcome deficiencies in the MiG-15.

It was powered by the same engine but with the addition of an afterburner, while other design refinements made it a superior fighter.

The first MiG-17 flew on 14 January 1950, production began in August 1951 and several thousand had been produced in Russia by 1958.

They were also manufactured under licence in Poland and China.

A large number continue to fly, in several small air forces and under private ownership.

The MiG-17PF was a radar equipped all-weather version that first flew on 8 August 1952 and went into production in 1953.
