The North American F-82 Twin Mustang was developed to cover the very longs ranges of the Pacific War during WWII. They were too late for that conflict but served usefully in the USAF into the 1950s.

Development of the F-82 (known originally as the P-82) began late in World War II to provide a fighter capable of flying the very long ranges that had to be flown in the Pacific.

It used components from the standard P-51H Mustang.

Only twenty had been completed by the end of the war and production was cut back to about 250 because of jet fighter developments.

Early experiments showed the F-82 could be a good night fighter and so many were constructed with the large radar pod suspended below the centre wing.

They were among the first US aircraft to operate over at the beginning of the Korean war.

This model represents standard F-82G of the Korean War era.
