History

The North American FJ-4B Fury was the last of a line of fighters based on the F-86 Sabre but converted for naval use. They proved very useful and served with the US Navy between 1956 and early 1962.

The FJ-4B was the final service version of a line of North American navy fighters that were based on the F-86 Sabre.

This final version was in many ways a new aeroplane with, in particular, a new fuselage that increased the fighter’s range while the wings were redesigned to carry much more weight to fit the aeroplane for a ground attack role.

The first FJ-4B flew 4 December 1956 and a total of 222 were delivered, the final one in May 1958.

They proved successful in their role and flew with ten US Navy and three US Marine attack squadrons before their retirement.

This model represents 143526 of VA-116 c.1960.
