History

The Renault YS2 was a light artillery observation vehicle developed in France in the late 1930s.

It was based on the Renault YS command and communications vehicle but it was found to be unsatisfactory and the project was cancelled.

The Renault YS2 was an artillery observation vehicles designed and developed in France in the late 1930s.

It was based on the Renault YS command and communications vehicle which used the running gear and engine of the AMR 35 light tank.

The YS2 differed from the YS in being fitted with a small turret containing a range finder and other optical equipment suitable for artillery spotting, and radio and telephone communication equipment.

Development began in 1936 using a prototype YS that was converted to the new standard.

There were, however, problems and delays in fitting an artillery range finder and radio equipment so the vehicle was not ready for testing until the northern Spring of 1938.

Like the Renault YS on which it was based, the YS2 proved to be overloaded for the light chassis and unreliable. It was considered a generally unsatisfactory vehicle and no further development was undertaken.

This model represents the only YS2 in September 1939.
