The SAN Jodel D.117 is one of a range of light aeroplanes derived from the original Jodel D.9 designed by Edouard Joly and Jean Delemontez. The first Jodel aeroplane flew in 1946 and the first D.11 series aeroplane in 1950.

After World War II the French government encouraged the development of light aircraft flying, including the design of new light aeroplanes.

The first Jodel aeroplane, the single seat D9, flew in 1946, and the two seat Jodel D.11 was subsequently designed in response to a French government request.

The prototype first flew on 4 April 1950 and eleven were ordered by the French government.

Joly and Delemontez then toured France demonstrating the D.11 to aeroclubs and it soon became popular because of its simplicity and cheapness.

All further D.11 series aeroplanes were manufactured under licence or as homebuilt projects.

Over 500 D.11s were built including the SAN (Societe Aeronautiqe Normande) D.117 which it constructed up until about 1962.
